Some determinants of opposite-sex friendships initiation and dissolution

Friendship is a close relationship in which people share mutual activities, develop social network, fell accepted, help each other, and develop trust, mutual respect, and affection (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2005). Quality of friendship depends on the sex of friends; friendships among women are characterized by more closeness, while men’s friendships are based on the mutual activity (Bank & Hansford, 2000; Fehr, 1996). Other factors that affect friendship are personality (Bubaš & Bratko, 2007), attachment style (Grabill & Kerns, 2000), and lifestyle. In modern society with increased mobility, friendships have started to fulfil roles previously occupied by family members (Doyle & Smith, 2002). Research of opposite-sex friendship (OSF) is relatively new, probably because they are considered a historical novelty and because they are rarer than same-sex friendships (Monsour, 2002). The OSF is a form of friendship that has historically been probably under the largest influence of cultural norms, as it is often believed that the only reason for unrelated men and women spending time together is a romantic relationship (Rawlins, 1982). The authors hypothesized that people form opposite-sex friendships (OSFs), in part, to acquire long-term mates (both sexes), to gain short-term sexual access (men more than women), and to gain physical protection (women more than men). In Study 1, men and women evaluated reasons for initiating OSFs, characteristics preferred in an OSF, and reasons for ending OSFs. Study 2 extended the framework...

In the Preliminary Study (N = 400), an act nomination procedure was used to identify the benefits and costs of same-sex friendships and opposite-sex friendships. In Study 1, a tot...

Two online studies evaluated the misperception of sexual and romantic interests in established relationships and tested four hypotheses: a simple sex-difference hypothesis, a projection hypothesis, a mate value hypothesis, and a mediation hypothesis. Two hundred thirty-eight (Study 1) and 198 (Study 2) members of young adult opposite-sex friendship dyads indicated their sexual and romantic inte...
متن کاملA Survival Analysis of Adolescent Friendships: The Downside of Dissimilarity.
The present study examined whether adolescent friendships dissolve because of characteristics of friends, differences between friends, or both. Participants were 410 adolescents (201 boys, 209 girls; mean age = 13.20 years) who reported a total of 573 reciprocated friendships that originated in the seventh grade. We conducted discrete-time survival analyses, in which peer nominations and teache...

The friends with benefits relationship (FWBR) is a complex, opposite-sex friendship in which partners freely engage in sexual activity within the relationship, but do not interact as romantic partners, but rather as platonic friends. And while framed as apparently beneficial, the current study attempted to determine if, in fact, any relational benefits actually exist within the FWBR as compared...
